60 second histories

This video covers:  An explanation of how the Ancient Greeks traded with the rest of their world.

You may not know this, but we Greeks make the best pottery in the world, it’s not just for eating off or storing goods like wine and olive oil they are decorative too. Some people even grow plants in them to enhance their courtyard and show off to their neighbours. Now as a merchant, it’s my job to take Grecian pottery to the different parts of the world for trade. What I want in return for my goods are things we don’t have much of in Greece like furs, cloth for clothing, wheat for good bread and metals for making weapons and tools. Our trading ships aren’t very big; they have a square sail and a single bank of oars to help push us along. Pirates are often a problem but the prow, or front of our ship, has a copper tipped ram that we use to smash into their ships if we come across them; I’ve sent many of a pirate ship to Poseidon. We usually sail across the seas to trade with Egypt and Libya but my favourite place to visit is Cyprus, where there’s good climate and good food.
