Mary Seacole; travels to Crimea

60 second histories

This video covers:  Mary Seacole travel to and arrival in the Crimea.

Being unable to volunteer as a nurse, I decided to build a British Hotel, which would hold a mess table and comfortable quarters for sick and convalescing officers. Before I left England for the Crimea I had business cards printed which I sent ahead to announce my intention. I also I met an old acquaintance called Thomas Day and together we formed a partnership. We assembled stockpiles of supplies and embarked on a Dutch steamer sailing to Constantinople. On the way, the ship called in at Malta where I met a doctor who had recently left Scutari; he told me about the British base hospital and kindly gave me a letter of introduction to Florence Nightingale whom I knew to be in charge of the Nurses there. I visited her at the Barrack Hospital, she was most friendly towards me and asked if there was anything she could do for me. She said that if it lay in her power, she would be very happy to help.
