"It is lovely to know that when teaching a history topic, that the 60 Second Histories resource bank of videos, lesson plan ideas and support notes are always available to us at the click of a button."

At Park Hall Junior Academy, we have been teaching the children about the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings focusing on their settlement, lifestyle, trade and key historical figures. Our main aim was to inspire our children and to give them a first hand experience by bringing history back to life. As a result, I contacted ‘The History Squad’ due to their vast catalogue of resources and well renowned experience. This led to an inspiring day of workshops featuring a wide range of artefacts catered for our topic and children’s needs. Prior to the visit, we used our 60 Second Histories subscription to show the children a variety of videos containing accurate and exciting information, which was delivered in an innovative, engaging manner. The children particularly liked the quick pen drawings at the start of each video, which would give an overall summary of what the 60 Second History video would be about. The online content definitely addressed the stereotype of history being difficult to learn and retain through the use of manageable snapshots of information and visual cues.

The advantages for teachers would be the length of all videos. They are short, snappy and historical vocabulary is shown in order to help children retain key facts with ease. In addition to this, they are an innovative way of introducing a lesson, which captures children’s imagination and attention. The videos were implemented into our extended writing sessions whereby the children were tasked with writing a diary entry from an Anglo-Saxons point of view. This is where the online film resources helped in particular as all key information was delivered to children in first person as though they were the historical figures. When exploring a topic in detail a vast amount of experience and knowledge always has a big impact when it is coming from the expert.
